Here's what to do if you really want to taste a great tea:
- First, look at the leaves - dry. Make sure they are good quality leaves and not like the ones you find in old teabags.
- Next, make the tea.
- Then, look at the wet leaves and at the liquor. Is it clear? What colour is it?
- Then you might want to add milk if you're tasting a black tea.
- Then take a sip. Professional tea tasters use 2 spoons - one to scoop and ladle, and the other to sip from.
- Now, SLURP. Suck the tea from the cup or spoon and make a SLURP sound and let the tea spray all over your palate.
- What do you notice? Is it smooth?
- When you swallow the tea, how long does the flavour linger?
- Finally, make an overall assessment - was it enjoyable? Did you like it?
